sunjay ghar kaa paahunaa ji-o aa-i-aa ti-o jaa-o. ||1||
are like guests in a deserted house; they leave just as they have come, empty-handed. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who never taste the sweetness of love, the delight of the Beloved,

are like guests in an empty house: they leave just the way they came, with empty hands.

Without the taste of love, a life leaves the way it came: empty-handed.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. paraym ras = the sweet essence of love, the one thing worth tasting. sunjay ghar kaa paahunaa = a guest in a deserted house, who leaves as empty-handed as they came. A warning, kept plain: a life can pass by without that taste.

A Question to Sit With

What is a sweetness in life you don't want to miss out on?
