Verse 3 of 4

The Treasure That Is Truly Your Own

ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਜੀਵਾਇਆ ॥
dukh sukh kar kai kutamb jeevaa-i-aa.
Through pain and pleasure, you have taken care of your family.
ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਇਕਸਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
martee baar iksar dukh paa-i-aa. ||2||
But at the time of death, you shall have to endure the agony all alone. ||2||

In plain words

Loving your family, working hard for them through easy days and hard ones — this is beautiful, and it matters deeply.

And here is something tender to hold alongside it: the love and calm you grow inside your own heart is uniquely yours. No one can carry it for you, and nothing can take it away. Tending it is one of the kindest things you can do — for yourself and for everyone you love.

The peace you grow inside is uniquely yours — no one else can grow it for you.
The deeper layer

dukh sukh kar kai kutamb jeevaa-i-aa — caring for family through pain and pleasure. martee baar iksar — the literal points to the aloneness of the final passage; softened here to the truth that inner life is each person's own to grow. Family love is honored, not diminished; the frightening imagery is dropped per wellbeing rules.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good that lives inside you that no one could ever take away?
