Begin Before You Need To

ਕੰਠ ਗਹਨ ਤਬ ਕਰਨ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
kanth gahan tab karan pukaaraa.
When you are seized by the neck, then you shall cry out.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਆਗੇ ਤੇ ਨ ਸੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥੧॥
kahi kabeer aagay tay na samHaaraa. ||3||1||
Says Kabir, why didn't you remember the Lord before this? ||3||1||

In plain words

It is easy to wait for a hard moment before we reach for what steadies us. But the calm and love we practice on ordinary, quiet days are exactly what hold us up when a storm comes.

So we begin gently, now, while all is well. Then remembering the One is already a warm friend we know, not a stranger we meet in a hurry.

The steadiness we build on calm days is what carries us through hard ones.
The deeper layer

kanth gahan tab karan pukaaraa — the literal is stark (crying out when seized). Rendered here as the wisdom of preparing the heart in calm times. kahi kabeer aagay tay na sammHaaraa — why not remember beforehand? — becomes a warm nudge to start early. The seizing imagery is dropped.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good habit that feels easier because you practice it when things are calm?
