Verse 1 of 5

How Will the Beloved Greet Me?

ਸੂਹੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ॥
soohee kabeer jee.
Soohee, Kabir Jee:
ਥਰਹਰ ਕੰਪੈ ਬਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
tharhar kampai baalaa jee-o.
My innocent soul trembles and shakes.
ਨਾ ਜਾਨਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਸੀ ਪੀਉ ॥੧॥
naa jaan-o ki-aa karsee pee-o. ||1||
I do not know how my Husband Lord will deal with me. ||1||

In plain words

Sometimes a little heart wonders: when I finally meet the One I have been longing for, how will I be met?

The answer, sung again and again, is the gentlest one there is: with open arms. The Beloved is the One who gathers back everyone who was ever apart. There is nothing to fear in coming home.

The One we long for meets us with open arms — homecoming, not fear.
The deeper layer

tharhar kampai baalaa jee-o — the innocent soul trembles, unsure how the pee-o (Beloved) will receive her. The trembling is rendered as tender wonder and answered with the tradition's steady reassurance — the Re-uniter of the separated receives with love. Fear transformed into homecoming.

A Question to Sit With

Who greets you in a way that makes you feel completely welcome?
