Verse 2 of 5

The Bees Fly Off and the Cranes Settle In

ਰੈਨਿ ਗਈ ਮਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਭੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
rain ga-ee mat din bhee jaa-ay.
The night of my youth has passed away; will the day of old age also pass away?
ਭਵਰ ਗਏ ਬਗ ਬੈਠੇ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhavar ga-ay bag baithay aa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My dark hairs, like bumble bees, have gone away, and grey hairs, like cranes, have settled upon my head. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Time moves like a quiet river. The dark, buzzing days of youth drift off like bumblebees, and one morning the soft white of older days settles in like cranes on a branch.

There is nothing sad in this — it is simply how a life flows. It just means each day is precious. So we don't wait to love the One; we begin while the morning is still ours.

Time flows one way, which is exactly what makes each day precious.
The deeper layer

rain ga-ee mat din bhee jaa-ay — the night of youth has gone; will the day too pass? bhavar ga-ay bag baithay — dark hairs (black bees) gone, grey hairs (cranes) arrived: a gentle image of aging. Kept as the natural, beautiful passage of time, foregrounding preciousness rather than loss. This is the Pause/keynote (second position, Kabir's pattern).

A Question to Sit With

What is one ordinary thing about today you would like to notice and treasure?
