Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 129
Verse 1 of 5

What Did You Grow With Your Time?

soohee kabeer jee-o.
Soohee, Kabir Jee:
amal siraano laykhaa daynaa.
Your time of service is at its end, and you will have to give your account.
aa-ay kathin doot jam laynaa.
The hard-hearted Messenger of Death has come to take you away.
ki-aa tai khati-aa kahaa gavaa-i-aa.
What have you earned, and what have you lost?
chalhu sitaab deebaan bulaa-i-aa. ||1||
Come immediately! You are summoned to His Court! ||1||

In plain words

Imagine looking back over a wonderful, busy stretch of time and asking gently: what did I grow with it? What did I gather that really lasts?

It is a kind question, not a scary one. It simply invites us to spend our days on what matters most — on love, on kindness, on keeping the One close.

Our days are worth spending on what truly lasts — love, kindness, the One.
The deeper layer

amal siraano laykhaa daynaa — one's term of service ends and an accounting is given. aa-ay kathin doot jam — the literal names the Messenger of Death; per wellbeing rules the frightening figure is dropped, and the accounting is rendered as gentle self-reflection: what did you grow that lasts? ki-aa tai khati-aa — what did you earn?

A Question to Sit With

If you looked back on a whole week, what would you be glad you spent it on?
