Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 135
Verse 4 of 5

Then I Saw: Allah Is My Friend

ਵਿਧਣ ਖੂਹੀ ਮੁੰਧ ਇਕੇਲੀ ॥
viDhan khoohee munDh ikaylee.
The lonely soul-bride suffers in the pit of the world.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ॥
naa ko saathee naa ko baylee.
She has no companions, and no friends.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਲੀ ॥
kar kirpaa parabh saaDhsang maylee.
In His Mercy, God has united me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਲਹੁ ਬੇਲੀ ॥੩॥
jaa fir daykhaa taa mayraa alhu baylee. ||3||
And when I look again, then I find God as my Helper. ||3||

In plain words

The lonely heart feels stuck deep in a well, all alone.

It has no companion and no friend.

Then, in kindness, the One brought me into good company.

And when I looked again, I saw: Allah is my Friend.

When a lonely heart looks up again, it finds the One has been its Friend all along.
The deeper layer

This verse moves from feeling all alone to finding out you had a Friend the whole time.

Vidhan khoohee mundh ikaylee: the lonely heart feels stuck in a khoohee, a deep well. Naa ko saathee naa ko baylee: no companion, no friend. Everyone feels this way sometimes, like the first day at a new school when you don't know a single face.

Then comes the turn. Kar kirpaa prabh saadhsang maylee: in kindness, the One brought me into saadhsang, the company of good and loving people.

Jaa fir daykhaa taa mayraa alhu baylee: and when I looked again, Allah was my baylee, my Friend. Shaykh Farid was a Muslim Sufi saint, and he calls the One by the name he loved. The Guru Granth Sahib keeps his words with full respect. The One has many names, and every one of them points to the same Friend.

A Question to Sit With

When you have felt alone, what reminded you that you were cared for after all?
