Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 135
Verse 5 of 5

Tend the Path Early, With Love

ਵਾਟ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਖਰੀ ਉਡੀਣੀ ॥
vaat hamaaree kharee udeenee.
The path upon which I must walk is very depressing.
ਖੰਨਿਅਹੁ ਤਿਖੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਿਈਣੀ ॥
khanni-ahu tikhee bahut pi-eenee.
It is sharper than a two-edged sword, and very narrow.
ਉਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਹੈ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
us oopar hai maarag mayraa.
That is where my path lies.
ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਿ ਸਵੇਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
saykh fareedaa panth samHaar savayraa. ||4||1||
O Shaykh Fareed, think of that path early on. ||4||1||

In plain words

The road I must walk is hard and tiring.

It is narrow, and it asks great care at every step.

That is where my path lies.

Farid, begin tending that path early.

Begin tending your path early and walk it with love — a road like that always leads home.
The deeper layer

This verse gives simple advice: the path to the One asks for care, so start walking it early.

Vaat hamaaree kharee udeenee: the road I walk is hard and tiring. Khanni-ahu tikhee bahut pi-eenee: it is sharper than a two-edged sword, and very narrow. The picture is a path so thin that each step needs attention.

Think of walking along the top of a low wall, arms out for balance. You don't rush. You watch each step, and you get better with practice.

Saykh fareedaa panth samhaar savayraa: Farid, tend your path early. Savayraa means early, like early morning. The advice is warm and practical. Begin now, walk with love, and the road leads home.

A Question to Sit With

What is one good path in your life worth tending a little every day, starting now?
