When the ocean is churning and over-flowing, then it is very difficult to cross over it. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The time to build a little raft is while the water is still and calm — not when the waves are already high and rushing.

The same is true for the heart. The love and steadiness we gather in quiet, ordinary times become the very raft that carries us gently across whenever life grows stormy.

Gather love and steadiness in calm times — that's the raft that carries you through storms.
The deeper layer

bayrhaa bandh na saki-o bandhan kee vaylaa — you did not build the raft when it was time to build it. bhar sarvar jab oochhlai tab taran duhaylaa — when the pool overflows and churns, crossing is hard. Rendered as the wisdom of preparing the heart in calm times so that love carries us through storms. Practical and hopeful, no dread.

A Question to Sit With

What is a calm thing you can build now that would help you on a stormy day?
