In plain words

When grace comes, it brushes the heart with love the way a brush lays down color.

The one who faces the Guru is drawn into the Name until they and the Name are no longer two.

Grace lays the color; the ready heart lets it soak all the way in.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das is saying: when grace comes, it colors the heart with love.

Har kirpaa karay man har rang laa-ay means "showing kindness, the One colors the mind with love." Rang means color, and here it is the color of love. Think of dropping a white shirt into a bucket of dye. It comes out a whole new color, all the way through.

Gurmukh har har naam samaa-ay means the gurmukh melts into the Name. A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru, who turns toward the teacher. Samaa-ay means to merge, the way sugar disappears into warm milk.

A Question to Sit With

When has a moment of kindness changed the whole color of your day?
