The Deep Red Everyone Longs For

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਕਉ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
har rang ka-o lochai sabh ko-ee.
Everyone longs for the Lord's Love;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਚਲੂਲਾ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
gurmukh rang chaloolaa ho-ee. ||2||
the Gurmukh is imbued with the deep red color of His Love. ||2||

In plain words

Everyone, deep down, longs to be filled with this love — every single person.

And the one who follows the Guru gets dyed in it completely, the deep, glowing red of a poppy in full bloom.

The love everyone quietly longs for is meant to fill you completely.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das is saying: everyone longs for this love, and the one who faces the Guru is filled with it.

Har rang ka-o lochai sabh ko-ee means "everyone longs for the One's love." Every single person, deep down, wants it.

Gurmukh rang chaloolaa ho-ee means the gurmukh is dyed deep red. Chaloolaa is the bright, deep red of a poppy flower. Think of a field of poppies in the sun, so red it almost glows. That is how fully the one who turns toward the Guru is colored with love.

A Question to Sit With

What is something everyone seems to want deep down, even if they don't say it?
