Verse 5 of 5

Grace Pours the Cup

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
nadar karay taa har ras paavai.
But if he is blessed with the Lord's Kind Mercy, then he obtains the subtle essence of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੩॥੭॥
naanak har ras har gun gaavai. ||4||3||7||
O Nanak, absorbed in this subtle essence of the Lord, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||3||7||

In plain words

When grace comes, the sweetness comes with it — poured like a full cup into open hands.

Nanak says: once you're soaked in it, the praises rise on their own, and you sing of the One.

When the cup is full, the song pours over on its own.
The deeper layer

When grace fills you up, praise spills out on its own.

Nadar karay taa har ras paavai — when the One gives nadar, a kind glance of grace, a person receives har ras, the sweetness. It is a gift, not a prize you earn.

Naanak har ras har gun gaavai — Nanak says, soaked in this sweetness, sing the One's praises. The singing, gun gaavai, flows out of being filled. Think of a glass under a tap. Once it is full, the water pours over the edge by itself. Praise is what happens when the cup is full. It is not the price you pay to fill it.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing in you naturally spills over onto others?
