When a heart is crowded with “me, me, me,” there's no room left to taste the sweetness — it slips right past.
Acting from pride, they bring hard trouble on themselves. They miss the very thing that would make them glad.
A heart full of "me" has no room to taste what is sweet.
Manmukh har ras chaakhi-aa na jaa-ay — the manmukh, someone who follows only their own wants, can't taste the sweetness of the One. The loss is simply that: they can't taste it. Ego crowds out the ras, the sweet taste. It is like trying to enjoy a meal while shouting over everyone at the table. The food is right there, but you never really notice it.
Ha-umai karai bahutee milai sajaa-ay — acting from ha-umai, the "me, me" feeling, brings great punishment. The plainest way to hear this is the natural ache of missing the sweetness. And there is hope in it too. Grace can open the heart again, and then the taste can come.
When has being too focused on yourself caused you to miss something good?
