Love Finds, Ill-Will Falls Away

ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਸੇ ਸੇਵਕਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
say bhagat say sayvkaa jinaa har naam pi-aaraa.
They alone are devotees, and they alone are selfless servants, who love the Lord's Name.
tin kee sayvaa tay har paa-ee-ai sir nindak kai pavai chhaaraa. ||3||
By their selfless service, they find the Lord, while ashes fall on the heads of the slanderers. ||3||

In plain words

The real lovers, the real helpers, are simply the ones who love the Name. Through serving with that love, they find the One.

And the dust someone throws to bring another down? It drifts back and settles on the thrower.

Love reaches the One; ill-will only circles back to whoever sends it.
The deeper layer

Love leads to the One, and ill-will falls back on the one who sends it.

Say bhagat say sayvkaa jinaa har naam pi-aaraa — the true devotees and true helpers are simply the ones who love the Naam, the Name. Tin kee sayvaa tay har paa-ee-ai — through their sayvaa, loving service, the One is found.

Sir nindak kai pavai chhaaraa — ashes fall on the head of the nindak, the one who speaks badly of others. The picture is like throwing dust into the wind. It blows right back into your own face. The harm a person sends out settles back on them. This is not a curse being called down. It is a picture of how unkindness defeats itself.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think trying to bring someone else down usually leaves the doer worse off?
