Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Only the one who lives this, in their own heart, knows it. Ask Guru Nanak, the Guru of the world. Think it over.
From the start, through four generations of Gurus, no one has reached the One by tearing others down. The door opens only one way: through love, and the wish to serve.
Some things you only know by living them, and no one reaches the One by tearing others down.
Jis ghar virtee so-ee jaanai — only the one in whose ghar, whose "house," this has happened truly knows it. Here the house means your own self. It's like learning to ride a bike. Someone can explain it, but you only really know it once you're riding. Jagat gur naanak poochh karahu beechaaraa — ask Guru Nanak, the Guru of the world, and think it over.
Chahu peerhee aad jugaad bakheelee kinai na paa-i-o — through four generations of the Gurus, from the very beginning, no one has found the One by bakheelee, back-biting and running others down.
Har sayvak bhaa-ay nistaaraa — freedom comes only through the loving spirit of a sayvak, one who serves. This brings the whole shabad's warning against speaking ill of others to its close.
What is something you can only truly understand by living it, not by being told?
