Bought Only In Good Company

satsangtee sang har Dhan khatee-ai hor thai horat upaa-ay har Dhan kitai na paa-ee.
In the company of the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, you shall earn the wealth of the Lord; this wealth of the Lord is not obtained anywhere else, by any other means, at all.
har ratnai kaa vapaaree-aa har ratan Dhan vihaajhay kachai kay vaapaaree-ay vaak har Dhan la-i-aa na jaa-ee. ||2||
The dealer in the Lord's Jewels purchases the wealth of the Lord's jewels; the dealer in cheap glass jewels cannot acquire the Lord's wealth by empty words. ||2||

In plain words

This wealth is earned in good company, among people who are turned toward the One together. You will not find it for sale anywhere else.

A real jeweler trades in real jewels. Empty words and cheap imitations cannot buy the real thing; only a heart that means it can.

The real treasure is found in true company, not bought with empty words.
The deeper layer

This wealth is earned only in good company, and only with a heart that means it.

Satsangtee sang har Dhan khatee-ai — in the sat sangat, the true company, we earn the One's wealth. It is not found anywhere else.

Then comes a picture of a market. Har ratnai kaa vapaaree-aa — the dealer in the One's jewels buys real jewels. The dealer in kachai, cheap glass, can't buy them with mere vaak, words. Think of trying to pay at a store with toy money. It looks like money, but it isn't. Nice words we don't mean are toy money. Only sincerity buys the real thing.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell when someone means something, versus just saying it?
