Gather The Wealth Of The Name

ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਭਾਈ ॥
har Dhan sanchee-ai bhaa-ee.
So gather in the wealth of the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny,
ਜਿ ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
je halat palat har ho-ay sakhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
so that in this world and the next, the Lord shall be your friend and companion. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Gather up the one wealth that truly matters, the wealth of the Name.

It is the wealth that stays your companion now and always, the friend that never leaves your side.

The one wealth worth gathering is the one that stays your friend forever.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It names what the whole shabad is about: har Dhan, the wealth of the Name.

Har Dhan sanchee-ai bhaa-ee — gather the One's wealth, my brothers and sisters. Sanchee-ai means save up, collect. Why? Je halat palat har ho-ay sakhaa-ee — so the One is your friend here and hereafter. Halat means this life. Palat means what comes after.

Think of a friend who stays with you when you change schools, move cities and grow up. Everything else changes, but that friend is still there. The Name is that kind of friend, now and always.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable you have that no one could ever take from you?
