Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 19
Verse 1 of 5

In Whose Heart The One Abides

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
soohee mehlaa 4.
Soohee, Fourth Mehl:
jis no har suparsan ho-ay so har gunaa ravai so bhagat so parvaan.
That mortal, with whom the Lord is pleased, repeats the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he alone is a devotee, and he alone is approved.
tis kee mahimaa ki-aa varnee-ai jis kai hirdai vasi-aa har purakh bhagvaan. ||1||
How can his glory be described? Within his heart, the Primal Lord, the Lord God, abides. ||1||

In plain words

When the One is glad in someone, that person naturally sings its praises, and that singing is what marks a real lover of the One.

How could you even describe such a person? The Primal One, the source of everything, has come to live right inside their heart.

When the One lives in the heart, praise flows naturally and words fall short.
The deeper layer

When the One is happy with someone, that person sings the One's praises.

Jis no har suparsan ho-ay so har gunaa ravai: the one the Lord is pleased with sings the Lord's praises. The singing starts with the One's own joy, not with our effort. It is like a smile that makes someone smile back. The first smile came from the One.

Tis kee mahimaa ki-aa varnee-ai: how can we describe the greatness of such a person? Jis kai hirdai vasi-aa har purakh bhagvaan: the Creator, the first source of everything, lives in their heart.

Something that big living inside a person is beyond words.

A Question to Sit With

When you love something deeply, how does it show up without you even trying?
