In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Bronze can shine so brightly it looks like gold. But rub it, and a dark streak shows underneath.

Wash it a hundred times, and the hidden color still won't come off. Looking shiny is not the same as being clean inside.

Looking good on the outside is not the same as being good inside.
The deeper layer

ujal kaihaa chilkanaa — bronze gleams like gold, yet rubbed it shows kaalrhee mas, a black streak; washed a hundred times its jooth, its impurity, stays. Nanak's opening image warns that shine is not the same as inner cleanness.

A Question to Sit With

When has something looked one way on the surface but turned out different underneath?
