Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 2
Verse 3 of 7

Painted Mansions, Empty Inside

ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਚਿਤਵੀਆਹਾ ॥
kothay mandap maarhee-aa paashu chitvee-aahaa.
There are houses, mansions and tall buildings, painted on all sides;
ਢਠੀਆ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਖਣੀਆਹਾ ॥੨॥
dhathee-aa kamm na aavnHee vichahu sakh-nee-aahaa. ||2||
but they are empty within, and they crumble like useless ruins. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

There are houses and grand halls, painted beautifully on every wall.

But if they are hollow inside, they slowly crumble into rubble. A pretty outside cannot hold up an empty middle.

What is empty inside cannot stand for long, however lovely it looks.
The deeper layer

kothay mandap maarhee-aa — houses and painted mansions, beautiful outside but vichahu sakhnee-aahaa, empty within, crumble to ruin. A second image for hollow appearance.

A Question to Sit With

What fills you up on the inside so you don't feel hollow?
