The sheep and the lions are kept in one place; O mortal, meditate on the Lord, and your doubts and fears shall be removed. ||3||

In plain words

Look how water lives quietly inside the earth, and fire waits hidden inside wood: opposites resting side by side without a fight.

The gentle sheep and the fierce lion, held together in one place. Turn your mind to the One, and in that same way your worries and fears settle into peace.

The One holds opposites in peace, and can settle the opposites warring inside you.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das is saying: the One holds opposites together in peace, and can do the same inside us.

He points to things that should clash. Vichay Dhartee vichay paanee means water is hidden inside the earth. Vich kaasat agan means fire waits inside wood. Bakree singh, the goat and the lion, are kept in one place. Picture a class where the loudest kid and the shyest kid end up as best friends. Somehow it works.

The same One can quiet what fights inside us. Remember the One, the verse says, and bharam (doubt) and bha-o (fear) are sent far away.

A Question to Sit With

What two feelings pull against each other inside you, and what helps them settle?
