I Rest in Your Shelter

ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
tayree saran pooran da-i-aalaa.
I seek Your Sanctuary, O Perfect, Merciful Lord.
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tujh bin kavan karay partipaalaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without You, who would cherish and love me? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I come and sit inside Your shelter, Perfect and full of kindness.

Without You, who would hold me and love me the way You do?

The deepest shelter is the one you were never actually outside of.
The deeper layer

This is the heart of the shabad: I come to You for shelter, because no one else holds me like You do.

This line is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the whole shabad. Tayree saran pooran da-i-aalaa means "I come into Your shelter, perfect and kind One." Saran means shelter. Coming to it is not weakness. It is like coming home.

Tujh bin kavan karay partipaalaa asks, "without You, who would care for me?" Think of a kid running home after a long day, straight into a hug. The deepest care comes from the One, and from nowhere else.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, or who do you turn to, when you need to feel safe?
