Verse 1 of 5

Whatever You Will, Happens

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਕੀਤਾ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹੋਇ ॥
keetaa lorheh so parabh ho-ay.
Whatever God wills, that alone happens.
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tujh bin doojaa naahee ko-ay.
Without You, there is no other at all.
ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਾਜ ॥
jo jan sayvay tis pooran kaaj.
The humble being serves Him, and so all his works are perfectly successful.
ਦਾਸ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੀ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਲਾਜ ॥੧॥
daas apunay kee raakho laaj. ||1||
O Lord, please preserve the honor of Your slaves. ||1||

In plain words

Whatever the One wills, that is what comes to be. There is nothing and no one apart from that one reality.

The person who quietly serves finds that their work comes right, and they are kept and cared for. Please keep the honor of the ones who lean on You.

What unfolds, unfolds by the one flow; the one who serves it is cared for.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: whatever the One wants, happens, and the One looks after those who serve.

Keetaa lorheh so prabh ho-ay means "what You want, God, is what happens." This is Hukam, the Divine order, the way everything flows. Tujh bin doojaa naahee ko-ay means there is no other besides You.

Daas apunay kee raakho laaj means "protect the honor of Your servant." It is not a deal, like "I serve, so You pay me." Think of how a parent looks after their own child, just because the child is theirs. In the same way, the One cares for those who come for shelter.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of forcing things actually made them turn out better?
