Small Service, Big Claims

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੩
soohee mehlaa 5 ghar 3
Soohee, Fifth Mehl, Third House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਸੇਵਾ ਥੋਰੀ ਮਾਗਨੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ॥
sayvaa thoree maagan bahutaa.
His service is insignificant, but his demands are very great.
ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕਹਤੋ ਪਹੁਤਾ ॥੧॥
mahal na paavai kahto pahutaa. ||1||
He does not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, but he says that he has arrived there||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

It is easy to do a tiny bit and then expect a great deal in return.

Someone can be nowhere near the doorway of the One and still go around announcing that they have arrived.

It is easy to claim arrival we have not actually lived.
The deeper layer

sayvaa thoree maagan bahutaa — little given, much demanded. The shabad opens a gentle mirror on the ego that overstates itself. The target is not any one person but a tendency we all carry: claiming an inner arrival we have not actually lived.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever said you understood something before you really did?
