Awake for the Wrong Things

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਬੁਰੇ ਕਾਮ ਕਉ ਊਠਿ ਖਲੋਇਆ ॥
buray kaam ka-o ooth khalo-i-aa.
He gets up early, to do his evil deeds,
ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਬੇਲਾ ਪੈ ਪੈ ਸੋਇਆ ॥੧॥
naam kee baylaa pai pai so-i-aa. ||1||
but when it is time to meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, then he sleeps. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes a person jumps up bright and early for things that only pull them down.

But when it is time to sit quietly and remember the One, that same person somehow falls back asleep.

It is easy to be wide awake for the wrong things and sleepy for the right ones.
The deeper layer

buray kaam ka-o ooth khalo-i-aa — up early for what harms, softened here from harsher wording so young readers meet the pattern, not a verdict. naam kee baylaa pai pai so-i-aa — the striking image of sleeping through the very hour meant for remembrance. It describes a habit we all recognize, not a bad person.

A Question to Sit With

What do you find easy to get up for, and what do you keep putting off?
