No Boat of Stone Will Float

ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰ ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ॥
gunahgaar loon haraamee.
O sinner, you are untrue to your own self;
ਪਾਹਣ ਨਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਰਗਿਰਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
paahan naav na paargiramee. ||3||
a boat of stone will not carry you across. ||3||

In plain words

We can be a little untrue to our own deepest self.

And a boat carved of stone was never going to float us across the water.

Choose what actually floats to carry you across.
The deeper layer

You can't cross a river in a boat made of stone. So choose what really floats.

Gunahgaar loon haraamee — this line speaks to someone who has done wrong and has been untrue to their own deepest self. It is an honest look at ourselves, not a curse.

Paahan naav na paargiramee — a boat of stone will not carry you across.

Think of trying to cross a pool on a brick instead of a float. Everyone can see it won't work. That is why the picture sticks. If we lean on the wrong things, they sink. If we lean on the Name, it carries us.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life truly supports you, and what only looks like it does?
