Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 32
Verse 4 of 5

One Instant Is Worth Everything

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਦੇਉ ਜਤੀ ਰੀ ॥
jap tap sanjam day-o jatee ree.
I would trade meditation, austerity, self-discipline and celibacy,
ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਪਤੀ ਰੀ ॥੩॥
ik nimakh milaavhu mohi paraanpatee ree. ||3||
if I could only meet the Lord of my life, for even an instant. ||3||

In plain words

I would gladly set aside every practice and discipline I could do.

I would give them all just to be with the One I love, even for a single breath.

Love is worth more than all the techniques meant to reach it.
The deeper layer

One moment with the One you love is worth more than every practice.

Jap tap sanjam day-o jatee ree — "I would give away all of it." Jap is repeating prayers. Tap is hard discipline. Sanjam is self-control. Jat is a strict practice of keeping the body's desires in check. These are all serious efforts.

Ik nimakh milaavhu mohi paraanpatee ree — "just let me meet the Lord of my life for one nimakh," one blink of an eye.

The practices are good. But they are like the road, and meeting the One is where the road leads. Think of practicing piano scales for months. The scales matter, but the real joy is the moment you finally play the song. The verse puts love first and reminds us what the practice is for.

A Question to Sit With

What is one moment you would trade almost anything to have again?
