Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 36
Verse 3 of 5

Everything Seen Will Pass

ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਮਰਨਾ ॥
baadisaah saah vaapaaree marnaa.
Kings, emperors and merchants must die.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਹਿ ਖਰਨਾ ॥੨॥
jo deesai so kaaleh kharnaa. ||2||
Whoever is seen shall be consumed by death. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kings, the wealthy, and busy traders alike all reach the end of their days.

Everything you can point to and see will, in time, gently pass away.

Everything you can see will pass, so hold lightly and love well.
The deeper layer

baadisaah saah vaapaaree marnaa — the powerful and the rich are not exempt. jo deesai so kaaleh kharnaa — whatever is seen is subject to time. The meditation is not morbid; it is meant to loosen our grip on the passing so we can hold the lasting.

A Question to Sit With

If everything visible is temporary, what invisible things last?
