Verse 5 of 5

Let Me Sing Your Name

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
kirpaa niDhaan naanak ka-o karahu daat.
O Lord, O treasure of mercy, please bless Nanak with this gift,
ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੪॥
naam tayraa japee din raat. ||4||8||14||
that he may chant Your Name, day and night. ||4||8||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O boundless kindness, grant me just this one gift:

that I might keep Your Name on my heart, through the day and through the night.

The answer to everything passing is to hold onto what does not.
The deeper layer

kirpaa niDhaan naanak ka-o karahu daat — the closing prayer turns from all that passes to the one thing worth asking for: naam tayraa japee din raat, the remembrance that is not lost when everything else is. The answer to impermanence is not despair but devotion.

A Question to Sit With

What is one good thing you would like to do every single day?
