Verse 4 of 4

The One Builds and Rebuilds, the Name Is the Gift

ਘਲੇ ਆਣੇ ਆਪਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਮਤੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
ghalay aanay aap jis naahee doojaa matai ko-ay.
The Lord Himself sends out, and recalls the mortal beings; no one else gives Him advice.
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਸੋਇ ॥
dhaahi usaaray saaj jaanai sabh so-ay.
He Himself demolishes, constructs and creates; He knows everything.
ਨਾਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥
naa-o naanak bakhsees nadree karam ho-ay. ||4||3||5||
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord is the blessing, given to those who receive His Mercy, and His Grace. ||4||3||5||

In plain words

The One sends each of us into the world and calls us home again, and needs no one's advice to do it.

The One takes apart, builds up, and shapes everything, knowing all of it. And the Name — the greatest gift — comes to a heart open to receive it.

The greatest gift, the Name, comes to a heart open to receive it.
The deeper layer

Everything comes from the One, even the gift of the Name.

Ghalay aanay aap — the One sends us into the world and calls us home again. Jis naahee doojaa matai ko-ay — the One needs no one else's advice.

Dhaahi usaaray saaj — the One takes apart, builds up, and shapes. Jaanai sabh so-ay — and knows it all. Think of a child with building blocks who makes a tower, takes it down, and builds a bridge. Nothing is lost. The same hands do it all.

Naa-o naanak bakhsees — the Name is the gift. It comes by nadar and karam, the One's kind glance and grace.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift you've received that you didn't have to earn?
