The Name At First Light

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਪ੍ਰਾਤਹਕਾਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥
paraatehkaal har naam uchaaree.
In the early hours of the morning, I chant the Lord's Name.
ਈਤ ਊਤ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
eet oot kee ot savaaree. ||1||
I have fashioned a shelter for myself, hear and hereafter. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the quiet hours before the day gets busy, I say the Name of the One.

It is like building myself a shelter that keeps me steady both now and in whatever comes next.

A quiet start to the day can shelter everything that comes after.
The deeper layer

paraatehkaal har naam uchaaree — at prabhaat (dawn, the quiet early hours) chanting the Name. eet oot kee ot savaaree — building an ot (shelter) for here and hereafter. Echoes the amrit vela practice of the pre-dawn hours.

A Question to Sit With

What is one calm thing you could do first thing in the morning?
