Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 55
Verse 3 of 5

The Jewel Worth Holding

ਕਰਤ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਦੋਊ ਕਰ ਝਾਰਤ ॥
karat bikaar do-oo kar jhaarat.
You eagerly commit sins and practice corruption,
ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਰਿਦ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਧਾਰਤ ॥੨॥
raam ratan rid til nahee Dhaarat. ||2||
but you do not enshrine the jewel of the Lord's Name within your heart, even for an instant. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

It is easy to rush into things that pull you off course, hardly stopping to think.

Meanwhile the real jewel — keeping the One in your heart — is right there, waiting to be picked up.

The most precious thing is often the one right in front of you.
The deeper layer

This one means we rush toward what pulls us off course, and overlook the real jewel.

karat bikaar do-oo kar jhaarat — people hurry with both hands into bikaar. Bikaar means harmful things, wrong turns.

raam ratan rid til nahee Dhaarat — but they do not keep the jewel of the Name in their heart, not even for a moment. Raam ratan means the jewel of the One. A til is a tiny sesame seed, so this means not even a little bit.

Think of a child rushing past a real treasure chest to grab a candy wrapper. The verse shows the contrast. What we chase is small. What we overlook is priceless.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing is right in front of you that you keep overlooking?
