Verse 4 of 5

More Than Feeding The Body

ਭਰਣ ਪੋਖਣ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਉਧ ਬਿਹਾਣੀ ॥
bharan pokhan sang a-oDh bihaanee.
Feeding and pampering your body, your life is passing away,
ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
jai jagdees kee gat nahee jaanee. ||3||
but you do not experience the state of victory of the Lord of the Universe. ||3||

In plain words

We spend so much care on feeding and looking after our bodies, and that is fine and needed.

But there is more to a life than that — a deeper aliveness worth reaching for too.

Caring for the body is good; there is a deeper aliveness too.
The deeper layer

This one means caring for the body is good, but life holds something deeper too.

bharan pokhan sang a-oDh bihaanee — life passes by in feeding and caring for the body. A-oDh means the span of a life.

jai jagdees kee gat nahee jaanee — yet a person never comes to know the joyful state of the Lord of the world. Gat means a higher state, a deeper way of being alive.

Eating well and looking after yourself matter. They are needed. Think of a phone that is always fully charged but never used to call anyone you love. The charge is not the point. Body-care is good, but it is not enough by itself.

A Question to Sit With

Besides food and rest, what does your inner self need to feel alive?
