Busy With the Wrong Things

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਘਰ ਕਾ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਰੂੜਾ ॥
ghar kaa kaaj na jaanee roorhaa.
The beautiful one does not know the work of his own home.
ਝੂਠੈ ਧੰਧੈ ਰਚਿਓ ਮੂੜਾ ॥੧॥
jhoothai DhanDhai rachi-o moorhaa. ||1||
The fool is engrossed in false attachments. ||1||

In plain words

It is easy to look impressive on the outside and still miss the one thing that really matters inside your own home — your own heart.

Someone can spend all day tangled up in things that will not last, and never get around to the work that actually counts.

You can look impressive outside and still miss what matters inside.
The deeper layer

You can look great on the outside and still forget the most important job at home.

Ghar kaa kaaj na jaanee roorhaa: the good-looking one does not know the work of his own house. Here "house" means the inner life, your own heart. Roorhaa is the handsome, polished one who still misses it.

Jhoothai DhanDhai rachi-o moorhaa: the foolish one is busy with jhoothai DhanDhai, false and passing things.

Imagine someone who keeps their room spotless for guests but never waters the plant that keeps the air fresh. The verse is gentle. Outside things are not bad. They just quietly eat up the time meant for what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is one 'inside' thing that is easy to forget when life gets busy?
