Verse 2 of 5

Wherever You Point Me, I Go

ਜਿਤੁ ਤੂੰ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਨਾ ॥
jit tooN laaveh tit tit lagnaa.
As You attach us, so we are attached.
ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa tooN deh tayraa naa-o japnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
When You bless us with Your Name, we chant it. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Wherever You turn my attention, that is where it lands — my focus follows the direction it is given.

And when the gift of Your Name is placed in me, that is what my heart takes up and holds.

The turning toward the good is itself a gift I receive.
The deeper layer

Where the One points us, that is where we go.

This is the "Rahao," the pause line at the center of the shabad. Jit toon laaveh tit tit lagnaa: wherever You place us, there we are placed. Jaa toon deh tayraa naa-o japnaa: when You give us Your Name, then we can repeat it.

The Name is a gift first. We receive it before we say it. It is like a song a friend shares with you. You can only sing along after they send it.

So even turning toward the good is felt as a gift, not a trophy we won by ourselves.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good in your life that came to you before you asked for it?
