Verse 3 of 5

Colored All the Way Through

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
har kay daas har saytee raatay.
The Lord's slaves are imbued with the Love of the Lord.
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਮਾਤੇ ॥੨॥
raam rasaa-in an-din maatay. ||2||
They are intoxicated with the Lord, night and day. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People who love the One are soaked in that love the way cloth is soaked in a bright color — right through, not just on the surface.

Day and night, they are lit up by it, warm and glad from the inside.

Real love soaks all the way through, not just on the surface.
The deeper layer

People who love the One are colored by that love all the way through.

Har kay daas har saytee raatay: the One's servants are dyed in the One. Think of a white T-shirt dipped in bright dye. The color does not sit on top. It soaks into every thread.

Raam rasaa-in an-din maatay: they are filled with raam rasaa-in, the sweet essence of the One, an-din, night and day. The old word says "intoxicated." Here it means fully absorbed and joyful, the way you can lose track of time doing something you love.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much it seems to color your whole day?
