Singing Away the Fear

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਅਚੁਤ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
gun gaavat achut abhinaasee.
I sing the Glorious Praises of the unchanging, eternal Lord God,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ॥੨॥
taa tay kaatee jam kee faasee. ||2||
and the noose of death is snapped. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I sing about the One who never changes and never fades,

the old fear of death quietly loosens its grip and lets go.

Singing of what never fades loosens the fear of endings.
The deeper layer

Singing about the One who never changes loosens the grip of fear.

Gun gaavat achut abhinaasee: I sing the praises of the One who is achut, never changing, and abhinaasee, never ending.

Taa tay kaatee jam kee faasee: and so the noose of jam, death, is cut. The old picture is strong. But what it points to is gentle. What is cut is not life itself. It is the fear that follows us around.

It is like being scared of the dark until someone you trust turns on the light and sits beside you. The room is the same. The fear is gone.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that helps you feel less afraid?
