What Makes Me Steady

ਗੁਰੂ ਧਿਆਇ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ॥
guroo Dhi-aa-ay har charan man cheenHay.
I meditate on the Guru, and the Lord's Feet, within my mind.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
taa tay kartai asthir keenHay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In this way, the Creator Lord has made me steady and stable. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I hold the teaching in mind, I keep the One close in my thoughts.

Then something in me grows firm and settled, the way a young tree finally stands strong in the wind.

Holding the good in mind is what makes me firm inside.
The deeper layer

Keeping the Guru and the One in mind makes us steady.

This is the "Rahao," the pause line at the center of the shabad. Guroo Dhi-aa-ay har charan man cheenHay: I think of the Guru and hold the One's feet in my mind. Holding someone's feet is an old way of showing deep love and respect.

Taa tay kartai asthir keenHay: because of this, the Creator made me asthir, steady and firm.

The steady home in the first verse comes from here. It comes from where we keep our attention. Like a young tree tied to a strong stake, the heart grows firm when it leans on the good.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you can keep in mind that helps you stand firm?
