Learning From Those Ahead of You

naanak uDhray har gur sarnaa-ee. ||2||31||37||
Nanak has been saved, in the Sanctuary of the Guru, the Lord. ||2||31||37||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I take the example of good people to heart and let it mark me the way a fingerprint of dust marks a forehead.

Kept close to the teaching, I feel carried and safe.

Take the example of good people to heart and let it mark you.
The deeper layer

Learning from good people keeps us humble and safe.

SaaDhoo Dhoor mukh mastak laa-ee: I put the dust of the holy ones' feet on my face and forehead. In old India, touching the dust of a teacher's feet was a way of showing great respect.

This is honored humility. It does not mean thinking you are worthless. It is like a young player watching the best players closely, wanting to learn everything they can.

Naanak uDhray har gur sarnaa-ee: Nanak is lifted up and kept safe in the shelter of the Guru.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone a little ahead of you that you would like to learn from?
