The One Thing You Take With You

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਲੈ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਲਾ ॥
amrit naam chalai jap naalaa.
Only meditation on the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, will go along with you.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਸੰਤ ਰਵਾਲਾ ॥੨॥੩੨॥੩੮॥
naanak jaachai sant ravaalaa. ||2||32||38||
Nanak begs for the dust of the Saints. ||2||32||38||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Of everything a person gathers, only one thing travels the whole way with you: the Name held in your heart.

So I keep company with good people and hope to catch even a little of their goodness.

Only what you hold in your heart travels the whole way with you.
The deeper layer

amrit naam chalai jap naalaa — only the meditation on the Name goes along; jaachai sant ravaalaa — begging for the dust of the saints. A memento of what endures versus what is left behind — but framed toward the one thing worth carrying, not toward loss.

A Question to Sit With

If you could carry only one thing your whole life, what would it be?
