A Hut Full of Song

ਰਾਗੁ ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੪
raag soohee mehlaa 5 ghar 4
Raag Soohee, Fifth Mehl, Fourth House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਭਲੀ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਛਾਪਰੀ ਜਾ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥
bhalee suhaavee chhaapree jaa meh gun gaa-ay.
Even a crude hut is sublime and beautiful, if the Lord's Praises are sung within it.
ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਧਉਲਹਰ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kit hee kaam na Dha-ulhar jit har bisraa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Those mansions where the Lord is forgotten are useless. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

A tiny, plain little hut becomes a beautiful place the moment it is filled with singing and gladness for the One.

And the grandest mansion is empty and cold if the One is nowhere in it.

A tiny place full of song beats a mansion that is empty inside.
The deeper layer

The rahaao. bhalee suhaavee chhaapree jaa meh gun gaa-ay — even a rough hut is lovely where praise is sung; na Dha-ulhar jit har bisraa-ay — mansions where the One is forgotten are of no use. Worth is measured by presence, not size.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a place feel warm and alive to you, no matter its size?
