Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 63
Verse 2 of 5

Rich in What Matters

ਅਨਦੁ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਏ ॥
anad gareebee saaDhsang jit parabh chit aa-ay.
Even poverty is bliss, if God comes to mind in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਏਹੁ ਬਡਪਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥੧॥
jal jaa-o ayhu badpanaa maa-i-aa laptaa-ay. ||1||
This worldly glory might just as well burn; it only traps the mortals in Maya. ||1||

In plain words

Even having very little can feel like plenty when good company and the One fill your heart.

And piles of impressive things are not worth much if all they do is tangle you up and pull you in.

Having little can feel like plenty when your heart is full.
The deeper layer

anad gareebee saaDhsang — even poverty is bliss in the company of the good; jal jaa-o ayhu badpanaa — let this worldly pomp be as nothing, for it only entangles in Maya. The 'let it burn' idiom means 'let it count for nothing,' not any literal image.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt rich in a way that had nothing to do with money?
