Chasing What Never Satisfies

ਜਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਸੁਖੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
jaa tay naahee ko sukhee taa kai paachhai jaa-o.
She has not brought anyone peace, but still, I chase after her.
ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜੋ ਸਗਲ ਕਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਪਟਾਉ ॥੧॥
chhod jaahi jo sagal ka-o fir fir laptaa-o. ||1||
She forsakes everyone, but still, I cling to her, again and again. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I keep running after things that have never once made anyone truly happy — and still I chase them.

They slip away from everyone in the end, yet I reach for them again and again.

Some things never satisfy, no matter how hard we chase them.
The deeper layer

jaa tay naahee ko sukhee taa kai paachhai jaa-o — I chase what has made no one happy; chhod jaahi jo sagal ka-o fir fir laptaa-o — what abandons everyone, I cling to repeatedly. An honest, almost rueful look at how appetite outlasts evidence.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever really wanted something, gotten it, and found it did not satisfy?
