In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Of all the loves in the world, the sweetest and most beautiful is love for the One who enchants the heart.

So keep your mind on that One, close to good people, and let go of being split two ways — half here, half there.

The sweetest love of all is love for the One, held single-heartedly.
The deeper layer

Of all loves, love for the Beloved is the most beautiful.

This is the "Rahao," the pause line at the center of the shabad. The shabad is a partaal, a song whose beat keeps changing, like music that switches rhythm halfway through.

Preet preet guree-aa mohan laalnaa: love, love, the sweetest love is for the enchanting Beloved. The word repeats like a heartbeat.

Then comes the advice. Jap man gobind aikai: O mind, remember only the One, the Sustainer of the world. Stay close to good people. And chhaad dubiDhaa kee kuree-aa: leave the crooked path of dubiDhaa, being split in two.

Think of trying to watch two shows at once. You miss both. One love, fully given, is where the sweetness is.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to want two different things at once?
