Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 66
Verse 2 of 3

Hidden in Every Room

nirgun haree-aa sargun Dharee-aa anik khothree-aa bhinn bhinn bhinn bhin karee-aa.
The Lord is absolute and unmanifest; He has assumed the most sublime manifestation. He has fashioned countless body chambers of many, varied, different, myriad forms.
vich man kotvaree-aa.
Within them, the mind is the policeman;
nij mandar piree-aa.
my Beloved lives in the temple of my inner self.
tahaa aanad karee-aa.
He plays there in ecstasy.
nah maree-aa nah jaree-aa. ||1||
He does not die, and he never grows old. ||1||

In plain words

The One is beyond all shapes, and yet has taken on every shape.

It pours itself into countless little rooms, each one different, different, different.

Inside each of us the mind keeps watch like a guard.

The Beloved quietly lives in the inner room — playing there, joyful, never tired, never old.

The One beyond all shapes lives quietly inside every one of us.
The deeper layer

The One has no shape, yet lives inside every shape.

Nirgun haree-aa sargun Dharee-aa: nirgun means without form, and sargun means with form. The formless One has taken on form.

Anik khothree-aa bhinn bhinn: countless little rooms, each one different. Every body is one of those rooms. The word bhinn (different) repeats like a drumbeat. The short rhyming lines keep the song moving.

Inside, the mind is like a guard at the door. And in the inner room, nij mandar, the Beloved lives and plays with joy. Nah maree-aa nah jaree-aa: never dying, never growing old.

Picture a tall apartment building at night. Every window glows a little differently, but the same power lights them all.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel most 'at home' inside yourself?
