Taking It Seriously

ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਹੀ ਡਰਾਇਆ ॥
sun sun hee daraa-i-aa.
I am so afraid to hear
ਕਰਰੋ ਧ੍ਰਮਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
karro Dharamraa-i-aa. ||2||
that the Righteous Judge of Dharma is so strict and stern. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I hear how much it matters to live rightly, and it makes me sit up and take it seriously.

Life is not a small thing, and part of me feels the weight of that.

Taking life seriously is different from being afraid of it.
The deeper layer

Hearing that our choices truly matter can make us stop and think.

Sun sun hee daraa-i-aa: hearing it again and again, I become afraid. Karro Dharamraa-i-aa: Dharamraaj is strict. Dharamraaj is an old picture of a judge who looks at what each person has done.

The point is not to scare us. It is to show that how we live really counts. It is like the moment before a big test, when you realize the work you did all year matters.

That serious feeling is what sends the heart looking for support, which is where the shabad goes next.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have started to take more seriously as you grow?
