Verse 2 of 5

Like a Strong Wind

ਮਹਾ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mahaa dutar maa-i-aa.
Maya is very treacherous and difficult to pass through;
ਜੈਸੇ ਪਵਨੁ ਝੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
jaisay pavan jhulaa-i-aa. ||1||
it is like a violent wind-storm. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The pull of the passing world is powerful and hard to cross —

it can gust through you like a strong wind, tugging you this way and that.

The world can gust through you like a strong wind.
The deeper layer

The busy, shiny world can push us around like a strong wind.

Mahaa dutar maa-i-aa: maa-i-aa (Maya) is the pull of passing things, and it is very hard to cross. Jaisay pavan jhulaa-i-aa: it is like a gusty wind that tosses us about.

Think of trying to walk straight on a very windy day. Your umbrella flips, and you get pushed off the path.

The verse is honest about how shaky the world can make us feel. That feeling is exactly why the heart runs to the One for shelter.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that can knock you off balance, and what steadies you?
