Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 7
Verse 3 of 5

Not Wandering, Not Trances, Something Quieter

jog na baahar marhee masaanee jog na taarhee laa-ee-ai.
Yoga is not wandering to the tombs of the dead; Yoga is not sitting in trances.
jog na days disantar bhavi-ai jog na tirath naa-ee-ai.
Yoga is not wandering through foreign lands; Yoga is not bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
anjan maahi niranjan rahee-ai jog jugat iv paa-ee-ai. ||2||
Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

It isn't found by wandering off to lonely places, or sitting frozen in a trance.

It isn't roaming through faraway lands, or bathing at holy rivers. It is staying clear and true right in the middle of the ordinary world.

You don't have to go far away to find what is already within.
The deeper layer

Another round of negations — jog na baahar marhee masaanee... jog na tirath naa-ee-ai — not lonely tombs, not trances, not wandering foreign lands, not bathing at shrines; then the refrain again, anjan maahi niranjan, unstained in the midst of the world. (The practices of many traditions are set aside as outer forms, not condemned.)

A Question to Sit With

What can you find right where you are, without going anywhere?
