Raag Soohee, Shabad 71 - No One Reaches the Edge of You

ਦਸ ਅਉਤਾਰ ਰਾਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਵਰਤੇ ਮਹਾਦੇਵ ਅਉਧੂਤਾ ॥
das a-utaar raajay ho-ay vartay mahaadayv a-uDhootaa.
There were ten regal incarnations of Vishnu; and then there was Shiva, the renunciate.

tinH bhee ant na paa-i-o tayraa laa-ay thakay bibhootaa. ||3||
He did not find Your limits either, although he grew weary of smearing his body with ashes. ||3||

In plain words

The great heroes of the old stories, and even the holy ones who gave everything up and covered themselves in ashes - not one of them found where You end.

They tried and tried and grew tired, because You have no edge to reach.

You have no edge for anyone to reach.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: nobody has ever found the edge of the One, because there is no edge.

Das autaar means the ten great forms of Vishnu told of in the old Hindu stories. Mahaadayv is Shiva, who gave up everything. Bibhoot is the ash that some holy people rub on their bodies as a sign of giving up the world.

Tinh bhee ant na paa-i-o tayraa means even they did not find Your end. Think of walking toward the horizon. You can walk all day, and it is still out ahead. This is not a put-down of anyone. It is a way of saying how big the One is. Even the greatest figures in the stories never reach a limit, because there isn't one.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so big you cannot picture where it ends?
