Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 74 - Your Hand Pulled Me Out
Verse 4 of 5

Raag Soohee, Shabad 74 - Even My Turning Toward You Is Your Gift

ਆਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਛਡਾਏ ॥
aapnee nadar karay parmaysar banDhan kaat chhadaa-ay.
The Transcendent Lord has blessed me with His Glance of Grace; breaking my bonds, He has delivered me.
ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਈ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥੩॥
aapnee bhagat parabh aap karaa-ee aapay sayvaa laa-ay. ||3||
God Himself inspires me to worship Him; He Himself inspires me to serve Him. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With one kind look, the One cut the ropes that tied me down and set me loose.

And here is the wonder: even my wanting to love and serve, even that longing, was placed in me by the One. It all comes from the same source.

Even my wish to love the One was the One's own gift.
The deeper layer

nadar - the glance of grace; banDhan kaat - cutting the bonds; aapnee bhagat prabh aap karaa-ee - the One inspires the One's own devotion in us. Recognising that even our reaching is grace quietly dissolves the separate I that would take credit.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you think your wish to be good comes from?
